Apple is preparing to introduce a significant update to its mobile operating system with iOS 27, bringing a host of new features and refinements. According to a report from Bloomberg, the forthcoming update will include a fully customizable Camera app, updates to the Weather and Safari apps, and system-wide interface changes. These improvements are expected to be previewed at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 8.
A New Era for the Camera App
The most notable change in iOS 27 is the overhaul of the Camera app, which will allow users to personalize their shooting experience like never before. Instead of the fixed layout, users will be able to select which controls—such as flash, exposure, timer, depth of field, photo styles, and resolution—are displayed. These controls, referred to as widgets, can be positioned in any order at the top of the camera interface.
Widgets and Layouts
To customize, users will access a transparent widget tray that slides up from the bottom of the app. The widgets are organized into three categories: basic, manual, and settings, making it easy to find the desired tool. Apple will retain the default layout, which includes quick-tap buttons for flash, Live Photos, and Night Mode. The customizable interface will be offered as an advanced layout, catering to professional users who need quick access to specific settings.
Different shooting modes—such as photo, video, and the new Siri camera mode—will have their own set of widgets. The Siri mode integrates Visual Intelligence features that are currently accessible via the Camera Control or Action buttons on newer iPhones.
Interface Adjustments
Currently, tapping the top-right corner of the Camera app reveals a full control panel. In iOS 27, this view will be relocated to the right of the shutter button. Additionally, Apple is adding new grid and level options to assist with composition and alignment.
Weather App Gains a Conditions Panel
The Weather app will receive a new Conditions panel that simplifies switching between different data views. Users will be able to toggle between temperature, rain, and wind using a single interface element. This new panel is essentially the same as the detailed module view currently available when tapping into a weather module in the existing app, but now it’s more accessible.
Safari Gets a Streamlined Start Page
Apple’s web browser, Safari, is also getting a refresh. The start page will feature an updated design with four tabs at the top, allowing quick access to favorites, bookmarks, Reading List, and history. This simplifies navigation for users who frequently switch between these sections.
System-Wide Interface Tweaks
Beyond specific apps, iOS 27 introduces several interface changes that affect the overall user experience. One notable adjustment involves the tab bar in apps like Music, Podcasts, News, and Apple TV. Apple had previously separated the search function from other navigation options with the introduction of Liquid Glass. In iOS 27, the company is reverting to a unified design, combining search back into the main tab bar. This is expected to provide a more consistent and intuitive navigation experience.
Keyboard and Home Screen Updates
When using the on-screen keyboard, users will notice a new animation where keys slide up from the bottom of the display. Additionally, Apple is adding redo and undo controls for the Home Screen. These controls will allow users to reverse actions when customizing icon and widget layouts, making the arrangement process more forgiving.
Preview at WWDC
Apple is expected to showcase iOS 27 at the Worldwide Developers Conference, which kicks off on June 8. Developers will get early access to the beta, while a public release is anticipated later in the fall alongside new iPhone models.
